a region of ice near the Martian equator, where water simply isn\u2019t meant to exist.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p><span>Everything we know about the red p<\/span><span>lanet says water isn\u2019t thermodynamically stable at low altitudes, but a team lead by researcher Jack Wilson, John Hopkins University, has now suggested that this might be wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p><span>And this new information could be groundbreaking for any future Mars missions. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"content-list-component image\"><img class=\"image__src\" src=\"https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/59d1fe9d200000f815084901.jpeg?cache=gcocvfoqim&amp;ops=scalefit_630_noupscale\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\nNASA\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p><span>The images in question were first collected by the neutron spectrometer instrument on NASA\u2019s Mars Odyssey spacecraft (the agency\u2019s longest-operating Mars orbiter) between 2002 and 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p><span>But have recently undergone some serious editing.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>Wilson\u2019s team were able to reduce blurring and remove \u2018noise\u2019 from the imaging data, improving the spacial resolution from approximately 320 miles to 180 miles, allowing us all a closer look.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p><span>\u201cIt was as if we\u2019d cut the spacecraft\u2019s orbital altitude in half,\u201d Wilson said, \u201cand it gave us a much better view of what\u2019s happening on the surface.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p><span>As a result they were now able to see evidence of \u2018significant hydration\u2019 near the equator, located\u00a0<\/span><span>between the northern lowlands and southern highlands along the Medusae Fossae Formation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p><span>Spotting unexpectedly high quantities of hydrogen gathering at high latitudes, the planetary scientists knew this was a sign\u00a0<\/span><span>of buried water ice much lower down (even though the spectrometer itself can\u2019t directly detect water).<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"related-articles\">\n<h2 class=\"related-articles__title\">Related&#8230;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p><span>This revelation is so mysterious because although hydrogen was always known to exist higher in the atmosphere, as confirmed by\u00a0<\/span><span>2008 NASA\u2019s Phoenix Mars Lander, but it was thought that this was impossible closer to the surface.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p><span>Indeed the team wonders how the water could be preserved there, with some speculations suggesting that it is only being held there by an ice and dust mixture cycled through the atmosphere the polar areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p><span>But those conditions last occurred hundreds of thousands of millions years ago and any ice deposited there should be long gone.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p><span>\u201cPerhaps the signature could be explained in terms of extensive deposits of hydrated salts, but how these hydrated salts came to be in the formation is also difficult to explain,\u201d Wilson added.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/2017\/10\/02\/scientists-discover-ice-on-mars-where-it-shouldnt-exist_n_18162414.html?utm_hp_ref=uk-tech&amp;ir=UK+Tech\">check out original<\/a><\/p>\n<script type='text\/javascript'>\r\n jQuery(document).ready(function() {\r\n    jQuery( \"#tabs_1762\" ).tabs({\r\n    collapsible: true,\r\n    active: false\r\n        });\r\n\tjQuery( \".scroller_1762\" ).width(jQuery( \".scroller_1762\" ).width()+1);\r\n\t\r\n\t\r\n\t\r\n  });\r\n  \r\n  <\/script>\r\n  ","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>check out this post on Scientists Discover Ice On Mars Where It Shouldn&#8217;t Exist Scientists have made an unexpected discovery while studying old images from the NASA archives &#8211;
