What they found was very different.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"content-list-component image\"><img class=\"image__src\" src=\"https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/59d5fa4a2d00009c17308c32.jpeg?ops=scalefit_630_noupscale\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\nraisbeckfoto via Getty Images\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>Using the sediment samples the team found that Africa had undergone a major transformation. Its previously fertile \u2018Green Sahara\u2019 had started to dry out, in fact at around the time humanity started to leave the Sahara was even drier than it is now, and a lot colder.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>\u201cOur data say the migration comes after a big environmental change. Perhaps people left because the environment was deteriorating,\u201d\u00a0explains Jessica Tierney, UA associate professor of geosciences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>\u201cThere was a big shift to dry and that could have been a motivating force for migration.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"related-articles\">\n<h2 class=\"related-articles__title\">Related&#8230;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>What\u2019s almost as impressive as their discovery is how they discovered it in the first place.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>To create a long-term temperature record for the Horn of Africa the team analysed 4-inch segments of the sediment core with each section accounting for around 1,600 years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"content-list-component image\"><img class=\"image__src\" src=\"https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/59d5ff1f2d00009c17308c3d.jpeg?ops=scalefit_630_noupscale\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\nLAMONT-DOHERTY EARTH OBSERVATORY\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>They then analysed the layers for chemicals called alkenones which are made by a very specific type of marine algae. As the temperature changes, so too does the composition of the chemicals being made by the algae, effectively allowing the team to take a temperature reading from 60,000 years later.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>To figure out the rainfall the team did something equally as impressive.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"content-list-component image\"><img class=\"image__src\" src=\"https:\/\/img.huffingtonpost.com\/asset\/59d6000c1400002000493300.jpeg?ops=scalefit_630_noupscale\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\ngilaxia via Getty Images\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"content-list-component text\">\n<p>They analysed the leaf wax that had blown into the ocean.\u00a0Plants alter the chemical composition of their leaf wax depending on how wet or dry the climate is.
